Are we paying attention? Are we listening to what our students are saying? Are we looking at the research and the data and adjusting our teaching strategies and curriculum delivery? For so long we have seen the research and watched the data, but we haven’t made the transformation into the new paradigm of student-centric learning. As a huge advocate for e-learning, both asynchronous and “blended”, I must comment that we are falling further behind in our plight to ‘catch up’ with our students. Students want to be engaged in their learning and want to have some input as to how they learn and how they are assessed in their learning. This video was posted on YouTube and as the father of a very curious and creative 8 year old, it made me think about what is going on in her school and how they are engaging her.

So what insights can we gain from e-learning strategies that can be woven into the fabric of our schools and districts?

1. E-learning is about ‘just-in-time’ delivery of curriculum that is dynamic and relevant to the student.
2. E-learning provides 21st century tools that are applied during the learning.
3. E-learning is a delivery method that allows instant student feedback and promotes collaboration among peers and with the teacher.
4. E-learning is a disruptive innovation that engages learners.

The cycle has been pretty clear in the fact that when new innovations arise, education has been the last to adopt and integrate due to a reluctance by many educators to fully understand the power of the innovation and to integrate it into teaching and learning practices. Many times, we fall prey to the ‘computer cramming‘ discussion that Clayton Christensen summarizes in “Disrupting Class” and think that the tool itself will revolutionize our classrooms. So with mobile computing (texting, IM, etc.) now becoming a norm for teens to communicate, my question is how do we harness this innovation and make a difference in education? My first thought . . . .put it in the hands of the students and allow them to ‘learn’ with it! Educators, it’s time we meet them (students) where they are!
